Book Review by Alec Markowitz
The book Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked The World by Pénélope Bagieu is a fantastic book that tells the story of courageous women who accomplished major things in the face of doubt. It wasn’t easy, but the women did it. The book is filled with fun, colorful illustrations that help tell the stories. The stories span the globe and many years. Some of the places are Paris, Dominican Republic, Netherlands, Australia, an African expedition, Helsinki, Athens, Montauk, the Bronx, Afghanistan, Pennsylvania, Vienna, and Syria. The main characters are an astronaut, an empress, a lawyer, a musician, a bearded lady, a queen, an actress, a warrior, an explorer, a social worker, and a rapper. The main characters had many different problems. One story is about a Bearded Lady who embraced her diversity and had a happy and fruitful life because of it. Another story is about, Mae Jemison, the first black woman to go to space. Another woman tells of her life in Afghanistan where she was going to be sold as a bride. Sonita Alizadeh escaped that life by writing rap music and moving to the United States. The stories are short vignettes packed with colorful pictures and fun, memorable facts. The reader will learn a lot and be inspired to conquer all odds and follow their dreams, just like these women did. Reading this book taught me that even though things are tough if you work hard and follow your dream then you can do it. I would highly recommend this book because it is funny and the stories were interesting.
