I grew up in south Texas, on a ranch near the Mexican border. My passion for photography was kindled when an aunt gave me a Kodak point-and-shoot when I was twelve. Ranch life left me with an affinity for sweeping landscapes, and animal life of all kinds.
Attending Barnard College in Manhattan was a substantial visual and emotional adjustment. I started photographing street life during a particularly exciting time in the city’s history, the 1970s and ’80s. My first jobs were in publishing, and I soon became a freelance writer of children’s books. I never stopped photographing, largely in black and white in those years. Galleries in the city were abundant sources of inspiration.
I moved to Westhampton 25 years ago. Today my work reflects a life shared between the North and South Forks of Long Island, and the Fundy coast of Nova Scotia. I photograph with DSLR cameras– many of my images are shot in the infrared spectrum. My current work includes photomontages, what I call borrowed landscapes, combinations of photos from my archives that take me to places existing only in my mind’s eye.
