Each year, the library hosts a Poetry Contest for grades K-12 to celebrate National Poetry Month, which is in April. Winners and honorable mentions are selected for grades K-2, 3-6, and 7-12. This year’s theme was “Who Am I?” A big thank you to Mrs. Claudia Wasserman for her generous donations to support the poetry contest and for selecting our winners! Below are our winners for 3rd through 6th grade.
1st Place: Sadie Kennedy Jaffe, 6th grade, Raynor Country Day School
Who Am I?
I am me
I am I
I am easy to mortify
I am me
I am I
I don’t usually qualify
For scholarships,
Contests and races,
Because everyone looks at me
with such uptight faces
In school,
I am average,
A real ‘middle’ kid
My grades are decent;
I guess I should be proud of how I did
My after-school activities,
Art, Gym, and Girl Scouts,
Where when anything happens,
Everyone shouts
When I’m with my friends
We play video games and cook,
But their avatars
always look like crooks.
I wish I could sleep every day until half past 9
Plus, some of my clothes aren’t even mine
They used to belong to my sister
Not very stylish right now
And I want to play Twister
But we can’t anymore
Because she is at college
And my parents aren’t as young as they used to be
No offense, Mom and Dad
But I don’t really get acknowledged
And I barely see my sister
And I barely see myself
Because people barely see my personality
And I barely see myself
2nd Place: Halle Geller, 6th grade, Raynor Country Day School
Who am I?
Still a child
Young and in school
I don’t know much yet
But I have a tool
My brain and my heart
Lead me through life
Good and bad
Happiness and strife
There are things that I love
A broad range of skills
Such as singing, acting,
and all different thrills
I enjoy skiing,
Water and snow
Through mountains and lakes
Once I even got vertigo
I love to write
Though sometimes I struggle
What to share about
I can never find the right route
I have tried hard
To put words in this poem
To describe who I am
Who am I?
3rd Place: Elizabeth Sultan, 4th grade, Westhampton Beach Elementary School
I Think Outside the Box
People think about cats and dogs and even frogs, but I
think outside the box,
I turn those frogs into dancing frogs, with cool hip hop
clothes, as they swagger on stage to perform,
Regular dogs are boring, if you ask me, when you can
make them into anything you want, how about flying
dogs wearing Pjs,
Those cats, oh those little scruffy cats, are so plain.
What about a unicorn cat having kittens on a window
pane,
People think, but I think different,
One day I will be flying, and the next day I will have super
powers, that’s just thinking outside the box,
and that’s my kind of thinking!
Honorable Mention: Camdyn Glover, 6th grade, Raynor Country Day School
Who Am I?
I am,
A Believer. I long for peace, justice, tolerance and understanding for all
and by all. I believe in love. Love one another.
A Dreamer. I reach for the highest point and strive to achieve my goals. I
don’t believe in settling.
A Go-Getter. I believe one should live boldly, take chance and live life to
the fullest. Just go for it! Have no regrets.
A Leader in Action. I help those around me and those who I cannot see. I
believe in setting an example for all of those around me.
A Warrior. I stand up for what I believe and for what is right. My voice will
not be silenced and my actions shall not be squashed.
I hope the world is ready for me.
Honorable Mention: Collin Roberts, 4th grade, Westhampton Beach Elementary School
I am me, and I love me.
Here are some things I love deeply
I love my local library cause its nice to hang out
there.
Pick out a good book I see to talk about
and share
Free food is my mood!
Arts and crafts won’t be last in fact there
in the beginning.
Arts and crafts are really fun and now that
I’m a tween I get to use a glue gun.
Once I made a dry erase mirror
When I wiped the expo off the board got a
lot clearer
My favorite librarian is my mom because she is
the bomb!
