Brightening up the walls of the Westhampton Free Library right now are works of colorful abstract art by local artist Phillip Michaels. The display is part of the library’s rotating art gallery that features a variety of works by local artists.
Working in acrylics, Michaels has been painting in his local studio for the past three years. All of his works feature a brushstroke technique he developed and are open to interpretation.
“I want people to connect with them in their own way,” the full-time artist explained.
Michaels didn’t originally intend to make art his career. It was while he was studying science and math at Stony Brook University that he discovered his passion, which was ignited by taking an art class. Hooked, he took another class, and then another.
“It just felt right,” he recalled.
He went on to study art for a semester in Italy before transferring to Hunter College to obtain his bachelor’s degree in fine arts.
He said he developed his painting technique by simply “letting it happen.” “I have no plan when I start painting,” he said. “I am open to what comes.”
Michaels’ work will be on display at the library until July 31.
